WM Open Recap
I dove into a bunch of data from the WM Open. Here are the most interesting things I found.
Player Awards
Roller Coaster: Michael Kim - made just 6 pars in 18 holes on Sunday.
Mr. Consistent: Hank Lebioda - a perfectly clean scorecard on Saturday. 18 pars.
Most Under Par Holes: Scottie Scheffler (shocker...) and Matt Fitzpatrick. 23 under par holes each.
Most chaotic holes (eagles or double bogey +): Matthieu Pavon. 1 eagle, 3 doubles.
Sandbagger (largest spread between best and worst round): Cam Davis. 68 on Friday and 80 on Sunday. I suppose this is actually sort of reverse-sandbagging...ended up being dead last of players to make the cut.
Hole Streaks
I decided to look into streaks of good/bad holes. I define a streak as any stretch of 3 or more holes where every hole is under par or over par. Streaks here have to all be under par or over par (e.g. 2 birdies, a bogey, and another birdie wouldn't count as a streak)
The Streakiest Player in the tournament was J.T. Poston who had three hole streaks in four rounds:
Friday: Eagled the 13th, birdied the 14th, 15th, and 16th holes.
He then made birdie on the 18th to shoot 30 on the back 9 and make the cut on the number.
Saturday: Birdied each of the final four holes.
Sunday: Birdied the 3rd, 4th, and 5th holes.
On the negative side, Patton Kizzire had two streaks of bogeys:
Thursday: Bogeyed 9, 10, and 11.
Sunday: Bogeyed 13, 14, and 15.
Overperformers
Took a look at pre-tournament odds to see who overperformed their expectations the most.
T13. Kevin Roy -11 (+81 spots better than pre-tournament)
T28. A.J. Ewart -7 (+80 spots better than pre-tournament)
T13. Zecheng Dou -11 (+75 spots better than pre-tournament)
Underperformers
T41. Xander Schauffele -5 (39 spots worse than pre-tournament)
T54. Collin Morikawa -3 (38 spots worse than pre-tournament)
T41. Max Homa E (35 spots worse than pre-tournament)
And just for fun, took a look at stats on the 16th hole specifically...
John Parry and Kurt Kitayama played the hole better than anyone else. Both made 3 birdies and a par. Tom Hoge had a rougher go of it. The only player to go +3 on the 16th this week.
Just 7 players made double bogey or worse on the 16th this week. Interestingly enough, two of the players (Tom Hoge and Marco Penge) were in the same group on Friday and both made double bogey. The third in their group, Eric Cole, made bogey. Some horrific energy in that group.
Let me know what you think! Any other silly kinda stuff you all would like to see?
